John L. Fryer worked for 30 years as a researcher and professor in the OSU Microbiology Department. Receiving three degrees (B.S. 1956; M.S. 1957; Ph. D 1964) from OSU, Fryer first worked at the University from 1957 to 1958 as a Fisheries Biologist in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. After leaving in 1958 for the Oregon Fish Commission, Fryer returned to OSU in 1963, finished his doctoral work, and became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology in 1964. The Microbiology Department was housed in Agriculture Hall until 1970, when it moved to new laboratories and offices designed specifically for microbiological research and teaching in the Bioscience Building (later named Nash Hall). In June 1970, cranes hoisted moving vans up to the upper floors of Agriculture Hall in order to move large equipment and supplies out of the building, which had no elevator.
